Sleepless Night in New York: Daphne's Initiation

Part I: Unconscious Reality

The air was cold, the night was silent. What seemed like just another ordinary day for the young socialite had been just that until the full moon hung in the dark sky. The stars twinkled all about as those haunting the darkness roamed the streets of Manhattan. What was unusually odd about this particular moon was the red rim of blood that encircled its luminescent glow. Some will use science to explain this phenomenon and others, like the Bible, will tell you it’s a sign that the end of world is near. For Daphne Fuller it meant nothing. She was asleep tucked quite safely away in her bed and far away from the outside world. Her soft chestnut brown curls lied sprawled against a silk pillow while long lashes were closed over emerald hues. Lightly painted lips were parted open as each curve of her body molded into the heavenly mattress. Egyptian cotton sheets were twisted about her petite form from turning in bed. Her nose crinkled as if she were focusing on something—falling deeper and deeper into the depths of her mind.

A scene played, like a movie as she dropped down the preverbal rabbit hole. It felt like a dream and yet it wasn’t. Incased by shadows, she could barely see a foot in front of her. A puff of cold air escaped as she tried to adjust her sight to the immediate surroundings. Reaching out, fingertips connected with a stone surface. Using it as a guide she hugged to what seemed like a wall of some kind. In the distance she could hear a muted grunt followed by a loud crash. Curiosity overtook her and she found her footsteps quickening to the fray. Dim light welcomed her as she turned the corner where Daphne found herself in the middle of an abandoned warehouse. Drawn to the sound voices echoed above the struggle that was ensuing. Something wasn’t right and while she never considered herself any hero, she couldn’t knowingly run in the opposite direction either. The gnaw of teeth would set her reserve and slowly she approached the stack of crates blocking her view of what was directly in front of her. Crouching down to remain unseen she carefully peered around the edge.

A woman sat sprawled on the floor against a rack; that must have been the crash she had heard earlier. Squinting her eyes, olive hues could barely make out the large hulking shadow towering above the woman—the swinging light concealed them. “Get away from me you slimy bastard!” Her voice echoed off the walls as Daphne watched her struggle to pull herself up. Slipping out from behind the crates, she would weave in and out of the tall racks lining the open space of the warehouse. The closer she crept towards the scene, the quicker her heart pounded against her chest. A roar shook to her very core, animalistic in nature. What the hell was she doing? There was absolutely no reason for her to move closer to the fray—she had to be crazy! Yet, something deep down in the pit of her stomach urged her to take each and every step. She didn’t know the woman, hadn’t recognized her as she had barely just caught glimpses of the long wavy locks of auburn hair and the tattered clothes she wore. “You have no where to run arcanist, no one to save you. Surrender now!” Arcanist? The word was foreign to her and only partly registered in the back of her mind. It wasn’t hard to miss the smug tone that followed despite the predicament the woman was in. “You’re not only hideous but you’re foolish if you think I’ll ever surrender to you!” She had some balls, Daphne had to give her that much. Without watching where she was going, her foot accidentally hit something that had caused a loud clang to bring her back to reality. Shit!

Refusing to move an inch, it would seem that no one had heard. Breathing a sigh of relief she bent down to the floor and reached for the crystal that had nearly caused her to have a heart attack. It was warm to touch, as she studied the smoky uncut gem. She couldn’t pull her eyes away from it, slowly twisting the rough edges between her fingertips. Encircling her palm around the stone, Daphne could feel a surge of energy—she didn’t understand from where. Lips sealed she found herself stepping out into the open. “Hey! I hope you know that I’ve just called the—” Before she could say another word, she had finally come face to face with the very thing that had been this woman’s tormentor. It wasn’t even human it was a large; reptile! A heavy mace dangled precariously above on the end of its tail. Unconsciously her jaw dropped as she stared at the creature right out of pure myth. Blood red eyes stared right through her soul. “Get back!!” Trying to mentally shake her head she barely had time to react as she watched the woman step in the middle of the creature’s path. She was barreled over trying to protect her; moments later a pair of arms had encircled her waist to drag her away. “Excuse me!” Daphne shouted only to turn and find that another had joined them. “You’ve done enough already.” A brow rose as if to defy the deep voice that had all but commanded her to leave the situation be. Crystal blue eyes froze her almost literally in place. Gripping the crystal tightly in her grasp, the lights overhead flickered and brightened. The Behemoth, momentarily blinded, had been struck by the man giving the woman a chance to get back up on her feet. “Lorelei we have to leave now.Catching the wave of her hand as if to dismiss him he would take it nonetheless. “Serik I was handling it fine on my own!” The last word faded as the two figures disappeared and the scene before her eyes vanished.

Part II: Awakening

Her unconscious mind fell back into the abyss of slumber where her physical body rested. Immediately Daphne’s form jolted awake, straight out of bed. Frantically her head darted from left to right as she raised a hand to her head. Something solid jarred her it and her memory as a look of confusion crossed her features. Pulling her hand away to stare at its contents, her fingers would unfold to reveal a blood-tainted crystal. Pain finally registered as the gem rolled off her fingertips to the emerald green sheets of her bed. Deep cuts from the rock had been imprinted into porcelain skin where blood trickled from the wounds. Narrowing her eyes, light spilled in through the long drapes offering its glow. With the crystal forgotten on her bed, Daphne swung her legs over the edge and immediately regretted the decision for getting up. She winced the moment her bare feet touched the floor; her entire body ached with raw pain. Managing to walk to the dresser on her right, her drawstring pants dragged along the floor as she hovered over the fine marble countertop. Fingers curled along the edge causing blood from her wounds to smear across the surface as she leaned on it for support. What had happened?

Closing her eyes flashes of her—dream came back to her. Had it really been all just been a dream? The crimson stain was the violent reminder that it couldn’t just have been her unconscious mind. Lifting her head, olive hues bore into her reflection as she looked over herself carefully. A groan escaped her, she felt as if her body had been ripped in half and tossed off the balcony. Every window and door had been locked in her Chelsea apartment on the top floor, and still appeared to be. No one had managed to find his or her way in or out, and she was never prone to sleep walking. Yet, what other explanation could there have been? It was absolutely insane to think that…whatever it was had been anything but a dream. Steeling her nerves for the expected onslaught of discomfort, she slowly stood to her full height. Recoiling, her hand immediately flew to her abdomen to clutch her side. Fingers curled beneath the soft material of her tang top to pull it up. Black and blue fingerprints were burned into her skin. What the hell was going on?

Gently gazing the marks, another flash from her reverie caused a cold sweat to form on the back of her neck. If she didn’t know better, from an outside perspective, it would have looked like she had been beaten and abused. But that hadn’t happened. She was in her bedroom, alone. Scanning her surroundings just to make sure she hadn’t forgotten any late night visitors, the room was completely empty. No clothes had been strewn on the bottle green rug, other than her own. She couldn’t hear the shower in the next room over. As she examined the sheets of her bed more carefully, only her imprint had been left. Pressing her unwounded palm to her head she sighed, “I need to get out of here.” And that’s exactly what she would do. Her last year of Law school could wait a year, maybe two.

That morning she spent packing, arranging her affairs, and bandaging her wound. Where would she go? It hadn’t taken her long to make up her mind. Daphne Fuller would not only find solace and new surroundings in Los Angeles but she would unknowingly find herself on the very path she was destined for—the very one she had yet to realize she was trying to avoid. She was fully dressed in a pair of fitted blue jeans, long green cardigan sweater with white tee shirt underneath, and knee high boots. Taking one last look at her room, hand on the doorknob; the smoky quartz crystal glinted in the afternoon light catching her eye. She hesitated for a brief moment as she bit down on her bottom lip. Drawn, it would take her five steps to reach the bed and pocket the crystal and with that, she left her room and shut off the lights. The city of angels awaited her and she was ready to immerse herself in a whole new world.
